The Difference Between Steam and ChemDry Carpet Cleaning

Wednesday, July 11th, 2018

There is no doubt that carpets and area rugs bring comfort to any home. Dirty carpets on the other hand can have the opposite effect. Even if carpets don’t look dirty, it’s still important to clean your carpets regularly.

With a few different types of carpet cleaning methods out there, it can be a task in itself to decide which method best suits your needs. Although steam cleaning is quite popular, there are more superior methods of carpet cleaning, such as the ChemDry method, that not only provide you with more thoroughly cleaned carpets, but are also safe and non-toxic to use around kids and pets.

Let’s take a look at the difference between steam and ChemDry carpet cleaning.

Steam Carpet Cleaning

Steam cleaning predominantly utilizes water and high temperatures and pressure to clean carpets. It is also known as the Hot Water Extraction method. The steam method uses high pressure to pump the cleaning solution into the carpets and immediately extract it with a vacuum pump.

It is often thought that the hot water will break apart and dissolve the dirt and soils in the few seconds time it takes to clean the area. The high temperature is effective in killing bacteria upon contact.

ChemDry vs steam

The downside of steam cleaning is that the dirt and soils don’t dissolve within the new seconds it takes to clean the area. Additionally, not all of the detergents and solution that get pumped into the carpets are successfully extracted. As a result of the inadequate removal of the dirt, soil, and the solution, carpets may look clean temporarily, but re-soiling is inevitable and the stains re-appear soon after.

Not only can these harsh chemicals cause additional wear on carpets, they can be harmful to children, pets, and even those with breathing sensitivities.

Aside from the inadequate removal of the dirt and solution, steam cleaning uses excessive water to clean carpets, which requires hours, even days, to dry completely. When carpets are wet for such a long period of time, it creates the ideal environment for mold and mildew growth.

The excessive wetness also leads to potential shrinkage or wrinkling of the carpet, not to mention the inconvenience of having to wait for a longer period to time until furniture can be moved back in, or normal traffic can be resumed.

ChemDry Carpet Cleaning

The ChemDry method uses the Hot Carbonating Extraction (HCE) method. It’s ChemDry’s proprietary method that uses significantly less water (80% less, in fact), low pressure, and uses all-natural, green-certified cleaning products. As a result, the all-natural products are safe to use around children, pets, and those with allergies and asthma.

The process begins by misting on the cleaning agent, appropriately named ‘The Natural™’, and it travels down into the fibers of the carpet and upholstery and begins its carbonation process to break down the dirt and brings everything up to the surface to be extracted and cleaned away forever.

The low pressure method combined with little water and no harsh soaps or detergents, provides a more superior, healthier, and a longer-lasting clean with no sticky residue left behind.

One of the many upsides of a ChemDry carpet cleaning is that carpets will dry in just a couple of hours, which greatly reduces and chance for mold or mildew growth. Carpets will not stretch or become wrinkled because of excessive water. The HCE method emphasizes extraction, so it pulls moisture and soil out of your carpets.

And best of all, the convenience of being able to move furniture back shortly after means you can go back to normal activities much sooner.

With a wide range of green-certified products, get a deeper, healthier clean suited to all your cleaning needs, from carpets, area rugs, and upholstery. Trust ChemDry to give you a professional cleaning.

What Makes the Chem-Dry Process Green?

Thursday, March 15th, 2018

At Chem-Dry Ottawa, we are dedicated to providing our customers with a clean and healthy home. We effectively remove dirt, allergens, and other toxins from your home, so you can breathe happy knowing your home is cleaner, safer and healthier.

In addition to caring about your health, we also recognize the importance of caring for the environment. That is why we have dedicated heavily to making sure our carpet and upholstery cleaning processes and products are safe for your family and the environment.  By using natural cleaners and conserving water, we put in every effort to ensure we are environmentally responsible.

Less Water, Less Waste

Traditional methods, such as steam cleaning, use excessive water pumped at high pressures into the carpets and upholstery. This is generally thought to loosen dirt, but in reality, it pushes dirt deeper into the carpets, all while using litres upon litres of water.

Our Hot Carbonating Extraction (HCE) method uses a fraction of the water as steam cleaning. Rather than using high pressure to loosen dirt, our all-natural cleaning solution, The Natural™, is misted on, releasing carbonated bubbles, which effectively loosen and lift up the dirt trapped in the carpets. As a result of using less water, carpets and upholstery dry much faster, greatly eliminating the chance formold or mildew growth.

Cozy up Your Home for the Winter

Friday, December 15th, 2017

A warm and cozy home is inviting after spending time in the freezing temperatures outside. There are many simple ways to add comfort to your home during the cooler months. Home decor can truly make a huge difference and can make the time spent indoors more enjoyable.

Read on for some of our favourite tips to warm up any living space.

Prepare your fireplace

Is it truly even winter without a crackling fireplace warming up your room? Fireplaces naturally draw people to them so consider rearranging your furniture with the fireplace being the focal point. If you’re expecting guests over the holidays, add extra seating around the fireplace for additional seating space.

Prior to using your fireplace for the first time, have a professional inspect it to ensure there are no potential fire hazards.

Warm up with warm blankets

Warm blankets can instantly make any room feel cozy. Try draping a blanket over the back or side of your sofa for a nice homely touch. If you prefer a more minimalist look, place some folded blankets in a basket nearby for easy access. Add a blanket at the foot of your bed to give it a hint of warmth for those chilly winter nights.

Winter fabrics are all about texture. Blankets with herringbone, plaid, or tweed patterns add a nice seasonal touch.

Invest in throw pillows

Pair your blankets with some throw pillows. Pile them on your sofa and on your bed for added comfort and coziness. Take it one step further by investing in larger cushions for the floor.

Switch from summer curtains to heavier drapes

Heavier drapes are a great way to add coziness to a room and to help keep drafts out. Heavier textures on the walls tie the room together while keeping the cold out.

Bring out the warm bed linens

Nothing is more comforting than climbing into a warm and inviting bed on a cold winter’s night. Bring out the flannel sheets and the heavy duty duvets and comforters. Add some throw pillows and blankets and get your beauty sleep in luxurious comfort.

Add a rug in the bathroom

Getting out of a warm bed on a cold, dark morning is hard enough. Standing on the cold bathroom floor should not be an option, so cover up the cold tile with a rug and make your mornings a little nicer.

Allergies in Cats and Dogs

Thursday, November 2nd, 2017

Similar to humans, pets can also suffer from allergies. While you or even other pets in your home may not show any symptoms, but the pet suffering from allergies may show all types of symptoms and behaviours.

Allergies in pets fall under 3 main categories: flea allergies, environmental allergies, and food allergies. The following are some of the symptoms your cat or dog may display if they are suffering from allergies:

– Red, itchy, or scabbed skin

– Constant licking

– Increased scratching (an itchy base of the tail could be the sign of a flea allergy)

– Sneezing, coughing, wheezing

– Runny nose

– Snoring from a swollen throat

– Runny and/or itchy eyes

– Itchy ears and ear infections

– Diarrhea or vomiting

– Swollen and sensitive paws (can also include chewing paws)

– Gastrointestinal problems

Gastrointestinal problems usually indicate a food allergy and can be accompanied by itchy skin and recurring ear infections. Your pet may not be born with these allergies, and may have developed them over time. When it comes to cats, outdoor cats tend to have more allergies than indoor cats since they are exposed to more allergens such as plants, pollen, and other organic matter. An allergy is likely to be an outdoor allergy if the scratching and licking is seasonal rather than year-round.

There are a variety of causes that may trigger allergies in your pets. Prescription medication, fleas and flea-control products can cause irritation on your pet’s skin, so speak with your vet to determine the best product for your pet. Exposure to mold, mildew, pollen, plants, perfumes, and household cleaning products can also trigger environmental allergic reactions. Some cats are particularly sensitive to the perfumes added to litters, which can lead to sneezing, excessive itchiness and possibly avoiding the litter box altogether.

Pets often develop allergies to certain foods, especially if they have been eating the same food daily for months or even years. Animals can become sensitive to the hormone and antibiotic laced protein in their diets.

Frequent exposure to irritants such as cigarette smoke can also lead to bronchitis in dogs. This constant exposure to smoke causes inflammation in the airway and produces excessive mucus, which further lads to persistent coughing. If this condition worsens, your pet may develop bronchitis.

It is important to take your pet to the vet for a complete physical exam to determine the source of their allergies and the appropriate treatment. There are many steps you can take to reduce or help alleviate your pet’s symptoms. If you suspect an environmental allergy, remove allergens from your cat or dog’s surroundings by checking for mold in your home and cleaning more frequently with all-natural products. Ask your vet for the most appropriate flea shampoos and other topical products that will help avoid irritating your pet’s skin.

During the warmer months, pets are more likely to spend more time outdoors, which can worsen their symptoms. Wipe your cat’s coat with a damp towel to remove pollen and other allergens that get trapped in their fur. Cleaning blankets, bedding, and other areas your pet visits frequently help to reduce exposure to dust and allergens. Switching to unscented cat litter can improve your cat’s condition and may even promote him or her to start using the litter box again. When it comes to food allergies, your vet will be able to determine the best course of action. He or she may recommend a prescription diet or suggest home-cooked meals that are free of the offending ingredients.

Pets are unable to communicate effectively with humans about their allergies, with cats often masking their pain. Monitoring your pet’s behaviour and inspecting their body including eyes, ears, nose and skin are crucial in identifying potential allergic reactions.

At (NAME) ChemDry, we are committed to providing you with a cleaner and healthier home. All of our products are green-certified, which makes our cleaning process safe and non-toxic to use around children and pets. Pet Anxiety and Urination

Wednesday, September 13th, 2017

Pet urine can cause major disruptions in the home. Pet urine odours can linger throughout the home and create concern for the bacteria trapped in the fibers of any carpets and upholstery. While this may be an inconvenience for most humans, it is much more traumatic for pets. Cats and dogs often urinate indoors when they are anxious or under stress.

Cats can be easily stressed and urinating is often a coping mechanism and a way of communicating that something is wrong. Rather than focusing on punishment, focus on the problem your cat may be trying to communicate with you, which could vary anywhere from fear, anger and uneasiness. Some of the reasons may include separation anxiety, traveling, moving to a new house, and major home renovations.

Research has shown that the most common long-term stressor for cats is unfriendly relationships with other cats in the home. While the introduction of a new pet may cause short-term stress during adjustment periods, an ongoing troubling relationship with another pet will lead to an unhealthy level of stress. Cats and dogs are also both tuned into their owners’ feelings, so if you are experiencing stress that is affecting your daily routine, it can also stress out your pet.

When healthy, house-trained dogs begin to urinate indoors, they may be feeling higher levels of anxiety due to feeling a loss of control. Reasons why a dog may have an accident indoors include: changes in their daily routine, moving to a new house, leaving the dog alone for longer periods than it is used to, and marking its territory when another dog enters its property.

Extra pampering, keeping litter boxes clean, and providing their own space can only do so much to help. It may be easier to identify the cause of their problems by asking:

  1. When did this unusual behaviour begin?
  2. Were there any changes in their routine such as with feeding times, moving to a new home, or a new addition in the family?
  3. Are there any behaviours accompanying the unusual urination patterns?

With both cats and dogs, it is important to take them to the vet to discuss the best treatment option.

As you stress over your pet leaving little accidents for you around the house, it is important to note that odours from previous accident areas can attract your pet to repeat their behavior in that spot. As pet urine dries in carpets, it leaves behind millions of concentrated urine crystals which make their way deep into the fibers of your carpets and can end up being absorbed in the padding underneath. As the urine dries, the smell becomes more pungent. Steam cleaning and shampooing are unable to remove the crystals and instead spread the urine around because they are a wet method of cleaning.

ChemDry, a drier method, uses its patented Pet Urine Removal Treatment (P.U.R.T.®) to destroy the urine crystals at the molecular level. Using its Hot Carbonating Extraction method (HCE), ChemDry destroys the urine crystals and removes it entirely from deep within the carpets or upholstery. P.U.R.T. is tested and proven to show excellent results by removing 99.2% of bacteria and 99.9% of odours from pet urine.

Ways to improve the air quality in your home

Friday, August 4th, 2017

During the summer, many of us leave our doors and windows closed to keep the cool, air-conditioned air inside. While this may save energy costs, it also circulates old and stale air throughout your home, which can cause many respiratory problems. Given how much time most people spend indoors, it is important to reduce the amount of air pollutants in your home so you can start breathing clean.

Common reactions to poor indoor air quality include: frequent sneezing or coughing, feeling congested, waking up with a headache, and suffering from irritated nose, eyes, and throat. With prolonged exposure to these irritants, some develop long-term conditions such as asthma or other respiratory infections.

Some of the biggest culprits that diminish the air quality in most homes include:

  1. Smoke that is carried indoors on clothing
  2. Things that burn such as candles, synthetic fragrance oils, and wood
  3. New furniture and carpets
  4. Building materials after major home renovations
  5. Household cleaning products, including air fresheners
  6. Personal products such as hairsprays, spray tan lotions, and fingernail polish
  7. Home furnaces (it is recommended you change your filter every 3-6 months)
  8. House paints

Here are 5 ways you can improve the air quality in your home.

  1. Open your windows

Leaving your windows open for even an hour is one of the best ways to reduce the concentrations of air pollutants in your home. Keeping your windows closed can cause condensation issues as well, which can lead to mould growth. It also causes the toxins and allergens already present in the home to continue growing.  Some of these irritants trapped in the home include mould spores, dust, smoke, bacteria, radon, and not to mention odours.

Radon is a radioactive gas naturally found in the environment. Almost all homes have some levels of radon present but how much can vary from house to house. Radon is produced when uranium in the soil, bedrock, or water begins to decay. Being a gas, it can seep into homes through cracks in the foundation or gaps around pipes. Levels are higher in basements and crawlspaces because they are closer to the source and often poorly ventilated. Opening your windows can greatly reduce the levels of radon in your home.

Just as important, many believe the heating or cooling systems in their homes bring in air from outside. However, most forced air-heating and air-conditioning systems do not bring in cleaner outdoor air into the house mechanically, so it is important to open your windows to let in fresh air and eliminate air pollutants trapped in your home. Newer homes may have the HVAC heating and cooling systems installed, which includes a mechanical feature that brings outdoor air into the house.

Opening your windows during winter or summer months will be a bit energy draining, but the health benefits that come from fresh air far outweigh the energy costs.

  1. Take advantage of the vents in your home

Bathroom and kitchen exhaust fans remove air pollutants directly from where they are positioned. After cooking meals, consider using the kitchen fan to eliminate fumes from gas stoves. Alternatively, you may open your windows and leave your exhausts on to bring in fresher air and to get rid of contaminants and odours simultaneously.

  1. Add more houseplants

For those that enjoy a little nature inside their homes, adding houseplants can produce clean oxygen and eliminate toxins in the air. Be careful not to over-water the plants as the excessively damp soil may promote the growth of microorganisms which could affect people with respiratory sensitivities. If you have pets in your home, ensure the plants are not harmful to them.

  1. Vacuum more often

Vacuuming at least twice a week (or more in homes with pets) can get rid of pet dander and other loose soils from the carpet. Vacuum too fast and you risk not picking up all the dirt trapped in your carpet, so vacuum at a slower speed for a more thorough cleaning.

  1. Get your carpets cleaned professionally

Carpets are like a filter in the home. All kinds of bacteria, allergens and dust get trapped deep in the fibers of the carpet. Sometimes vacuuming alone is not enough for a detailed deep clean. Professional carpet cleaning can greatly improve the air quality in your home with the added bonus of prolonging the life of your carpets.

ChemDry Ottawa offers a revolutionary cleaning through its Hot Carbonating Extraction (HCE) process, which is drier, faster, and healthier. An independent air quality laboratory tested this process in multiple homes and found that ChemDry removes an average of 98.1% of common household allergens from carpets and upholstery. The main cleaning solution, The Natural®, is Green-certified and safe to use around children, pets, and those suffering from asthma. It uses only 15-20% moisture so it is better for the environment and takes less time to dry, greatly reducing the risk for mold and mildew growth.

Home maintenance tips to brighten up your space

Ottawa carpet cleaning

Is your home in need of a makeover? Is it looking a little gray and boring? Could it do with some brightening up? If so, don’t despair – help is at hand in the form of these clever, money-saving tips that are sure to bring new vigor and energy into any home.

Few people can afford to start knocking walls down or purchasing new furniture sets. However, even something as simple as a new set of drapes for the living room can radically transform the ambience of the living space, and you don’t have to spend a fortune.

A fresh coat of paint

Repainting a room really can make it feel like a whole new space. Try adding a bright feature wall to the boring white walls of your living room, or even adding some color to a kitchen or dining room. If you don’t feel like repainting entire rooms, consider repainting dining room chair sets or kitchen cabinets.

Kitchen makeover

The doors to kitchen cabinets and cupboards start to show signs of wear and tear far more quickly than the cabinets themselves, and people often replace their entire kitchen cabinetry needlessly when they could simply have purchased new doors. Unless your kitchen was custom-built, most cabinet doors come in standard sizes, and replacing them will cost far less than a whole new unit. Your cupboards will get a new lease of life with new doors that will not only be brighter but will be brought right up-to-date with modern design trends.

New upholstery

Similarly, it is not always necessary to buy a new sofa or a new dining suite: reupholstering lounge and dining room furniture in bold, bright patterns and colors can bring much needed splashes of color to even the most conservative of rooms. If reupholstering your sofa seems like a very complicated task, fitted sofa covers are now available to fit most standard sizes, which are extremely practical as they can be removed and machine washed.

Carpet cleaning

Carpets can become so stained and grimy that their original color and pattern can be hard to detect underneath all the dog hairs, ground-in dirt and general wear. Do it yourself or get a professional company such as Ottawa Carpet Cleaning to do the job for you – you’ll be surprised by the effect a clean carpet will have.

New drapes

Invest in some new drapes for the living room or bedrooms – or even consider updating to blinds or wooden shutters, which can add a cleaner look and are very contemporary. Remember that a bright room does not need to be filled with bold colors or patterns – a clean, fresh look can be obtained by optimizing the flow of natural light – and here, blinds can make a real difference.

Anyone can brighten up their home, whatever the budget. Rooms and living spaces can be transformed over the space of a weekend with a few choice design ideas and a surprisingly small amount of effort.
